MonoDuty vs xMatters

Evaluate xMatters when your requirement extends into operational coordination and event-driven workflows. Evaluate MonoDuty for a focused signal-to-owner path. In either case, prove the exact routing behavior with your team's schedule and delivery destinations.

Make the decision around your team’s work

Multiple regions share a response path

Record the time zone, local handoff window, override behavior and final fallback for each region. Broad global-scheduling language does not prove your intended boundary behavior. Keep the test small enough to trace every recipient and timestamp.

Notification allowances change the comparison

xMatters publishes a messaging policy with destination groupings and plan allowances. MonoDuty publishes monthly SMS and voice quotas. Put the same countries and expected volume in both quotes, including any contract-specific terms, before comparing a recurring total.

The public source contradicts itself

At the review date, xMatters' free plan card and FAQ disagree on the allowed user count. We keep that unresolved instead of selecting the more attractive number. Obtain confirmation before using the free tier to plan a production rotation.

MonoDuty

Focused monitoring, incident alerting and on-call ownership.

Paid entry
Pro: $9/user/month, up to 25 users. Business: $19/user/month. Paid subscriptions are sales-assisted. Source
Free scope
One user; email notifications; 50 incidents/month and 7-day history. Source
Delivery and limits
Pro includes 500 SMS and 200 voice notifications/month; Business 2,000 SMS and 500 voice. Confirm destinations and channel availability. Source
Schedules
Team schedules with time zones, rotation layers and temporary overrides. Custom escalation policies require Pro or Business; repeated execution is not implemented. Source
Response workflow
Incident acknowledgment and resolution are documented. Slack updates are one-way; responders act in MonoDuty or supported response paths. Source
Monitoring
HTTP/HTTPS checks run from Helsinki. This is a single-location monitoring worker. Source

Ask during the trial: Require a real missed-acknowledgment test, quota checks and an exit export. Do not assume mobile push, chat-side response actions or repeating escalation loops.

Public sources checked 2026-09-11. No independent reliability benchmark.

xMatters

On-call management and incident workflows with plan-specific messaging allowances.

Paid entry
Starter lists $15/user/month, up to 25 users. Base lists $39/user/month; Advanced requires a quote. Confirm the subscription term. Source
Free scope
The same pricing page gives conflicting five-user and ten-user free limits; this comparison does not resolve that discrepancy. Source
Schedules
The pricing matrix lists global scheduling, escalation and round-robin options; check the purchased tier. Source
Delivery
Messaging policy distinguishes included destinations and rest-of-world SMS/phone allowances; contracts may vary. Source

Ask during the trial: Reconcile the free-user limit with sales: the pricing card says five but its FAQ says ten. Get destination-specific messaging allowances in the quote.

What to prove in the trial

  1. Run a handoff and override test across the team's actual time zones.
  2. Prove the event workflow can identify the correct team from the sanitized payload.
  3. Exercise SMS and voice to the intended countries and check counted usage.
  4. Get the user limit, license types and messaging terms confirmed in the order.

Use synthetic events and agreed test recipients. Keep the current paging route active while you gather evidence, then rehearse rollback before cutover.
