MonoDuty vs Better Stack
Both belong in an evaluation when the buying problem starts with external monitoring and a reachable responder. The decision should turn on the monitoring evidence, response workflow and total capacity you need, rather than the lowest displayed seat price.

Make the decision around your team’s work
An endpoint fails only from one region
Define the observation locations required to identify the failure. MonoDuty explicitly documents a Helsinki worker. Put any multi-location requirement in the acceptance criteria and verify the corresponding Better Stack monitoring configuration. A green check from one place cannot establish availability everywhere.
Responders and observers are different people
Better Stack separates paid responders from free team members. Count who must receive and act on a page, who only needs context, and which status-page audiences matter. Compare that role model with the MonoDuty plan, then add monitoring and telemetry capacity.
One alert becomes several kinds of work
Test the monitor recovery, heartbeat expiry, escalation and public communication as separate actions. If expanded Slack/Teams workflows or status-page customization are required, verify their separate charges. Avoid buying an observability bundle solely to fix a phone notification configuration issue.

Ask during the trial: Require a real missed-acknowledgment test, quota checks and an exit export. Do not assume mobile push, chat-side response actions or repeating escalation loops.

What to prove in the trial
- Check a controlled HTTP failure and recovery, including the observed check location and retry window.
- Pause a non-production heartbeat past its grace period and resume it.
- Test the responder's phone and backup path with current notification settings.
- Price responder licenses, monitor capacity, retention and any status-page extras together.
Use synthetic events and agreed test recipients. Keep the current paging route active while you gather evidence, then rehearse rollback before cutover.
