MonoDuty vs incident.io
The useful dividing question is what happens after the page is received. Evaluate MonoDuty for a focused detection-to-owner flow. Evaluate incident.io when the team also needs to coordinate the incident inside Slack or Teams, assign work and maintain a repeatable response process.

Make the decision around your team’s work
A chat message or a chat-operated incident
These are different requirements. MonoDuty documents one-way lifecycle updates to Slack. If the team expects to acknowledge, assign roles or run the incident within chat, test those actions in incident.io and record which package enables them. Do not give both products an undifferentiated Slack checkmark.
A small team growing its rotation
Use the free-plan limits to design a trial, then price the intended steady state. incident.io lists single-team on-call in Basic, while MonoDuty Free is a one-user email scope. A successful single-user demonstration does not verify a staffed primary-and-backup rota.
Keep incident response and paging costs separate
incident.io lists standalone On-call and different on-call add-on rates for Incident Response plans. Ask which people need each license. Enter the complete combination in the worksheet before comparing it with a MonoDuty paid plan.

Ask during the trial: Require a real missed-acknowledgment test, quota checks and an exit export. Do not assume mobile push, chat-side response actions or repeating escalation loops.

What to prove in the trial
- Declare a controlled incident from the actual monitoring source and follow it through chat.
- Have a backup take ownership after an unanswered page, including a cover request or override.
- Run the fallback without relying on Slack or Teams being available.
- Capture the final incident record, action items and recurring subscription scope.
Use synthetic events and agreed test recipients. Keep the current paging route active while you gather evidence, then rehearse rollback before cutover.
