An interruptive notification intended to reach a human responder for action. The word carries an implicit promise: something is expected to change because a person was interrupted. Sending a page for a condition with no available action is what converts a working notification system into background noise.
In practice
A certificate expiring in thirty days is important and should be tracked. Paging someone about it at 04:00 spends attention that the next real outage will need.
