Acknowledgement

GlossaryWritten by Burak YReviewed by Burak YLast reviewed 3 September 2026

A recorded action showing that a responder has taken ownership of an alert or incident. Acknowledgement should normally stop or change escalation, but it does not necessarily mean the issue is understood or resolved. Treating acknowledgement as a proxy for progress is one of the most common ways an incident stalls without anyone noticing.

In practice

A responder acknowledges a database-latency page at 02:14, which stops escalation to the secondary. Ten minutes later they still have no diagnosis — the correct move is to escalate deliberately, not to keep holding a silent pager.
