Preventing selected alerts from notifying responders under controlled conditions. Suppression is legitimate during known maintenance or a mitigated failure, and dangerous when it is open-ended: an alert muted indefinitely is a monitoring gap that nobody has recorded as a monitoring gap.
In practice
Alerts are muted for a two-hour migration window. Without an expiry, the same mute is still active six weeks later when the condition it was hiding becomes a real outage.
