MTTR

GlossaryWritten by Burak YReviewed by Burak YLast reviewed 3 September 2026

A context-dependent acronym often used for mean time to resolve, restore, repair, or recover; the exact definition must be stated. Two teams comparing MTTR without agreeing which meaning they use are comparing different measurements, and the difference between restoring service and repairing the underlying cause is frequently hours.

In practice

One team measures from first alert to service restored. Another measures from incident declared to root cause fixed. Their MTTR figures are not comparable, even within the same company.
