Alert routing

GlossaryWritten by Burak YReviewed by Burak YLast reviewed 3 September 2026

Logic that maps an incoming alert to a service, team, schedule, or escalation path. Routing is where ownership becomes operational: a correct alert delivered to the wrong team costs the same response time as no alert at all, and the error is usually invisible until someone reads the incident timeline afterwards.

In practice

A payment-processing alert routes on a service label. When a service is renamed and the label is not updated, the page silently falls back to a default team that has no context and no access.
